Week 2

Challenges:
  • How do we move forward? We keep wondering what this whole thing will look like at the end? We came to the understanding that it's ok not to know, and need to remind ourselves that the end will look different for every student.
  • Moving from we have always done and to thinking it's ok to not know what's coming!
  • Having an open and growth mindset!
  • Keeping the students engaged throughout some of the tuning in activities - (role of the student, Exhibition is/is not, making central ideas, inquiring into issues, personal, local and global choosing topics)

This week:
  • We spent a lot of time talking about and debunking myths and assumptions about the Exhibition. It will not look the same way it did last year and almost nothing will be the same as you perceive it.
  • Students became excited about the idea of choosing "topics" or areas of investigation!
  • We had a field trip to the Beijing Science and Technology Museum - getting kids excited for all of the possibilities.
  • We reviewed the roles of students, teachers, parents and mentors during the Exhibition
  • We introduced students to our 3 lines of inquiry.
  • We created a Central idea for our Exhibition by examining past unit CIs, LOIs and related concepts
  • We created a master list/mind map of personal, local and global issues- (that could be connected to discoveries and innovation)
  • We watched a video about a kid named Kelvin Doe who saw a problem in his community and tried to solve it himself! Also so many other videos about really neat innovations!
  • We did a mini lesson on what it means to Recount vs. Reflect.
